Crypt

The Crypt news sheet (left) starts with a rallying call :
THE CRYPT CALLING:
Whenever we try to do something out of the ordinary we seem to frighten many of you away....WHY?

it continues - the Seventh Anniversary 'do' at the Turnpike was an evening which was greatly enjoyed by all those present. BUT, WHERE WERE THE REST?
That it was too expensive was no excuse. You had ten weeks notice - that would only have amounted to 13p per week. Last Tuesday we presented FRITZ SPIEGEL in a unique programme which most of you found extremely funny. THOSE OF YOU WHO WERE THERE, THAT IS. Surely, there is more to life than pop-music, beer and bed. COME ON - SHAKE A LEG - GET MOVING.

Hmmm....next time you're moaning at the yoof of today - mind on!
WSPANE banner Wetherby Crypt News Sheet 1973

Size - A5, printed both sides. Wednesday April 4th, mentioned in the text suggests the year might be 1973. Extracts below reproduced (almost) verbatim....

Submitted by Jon Parlby, March 2004. What do you think of Youth Culture? I think it would be a good idea!
TUESDAY FILM:
EVERY HOME SHOULD HAVE ONE
Marty Feldman advocates ideas to sell porridge by using sex. The film is extremely funny and rather coarse. Lovers of the Marty Feldman zany humour will want to see this film.
I had doubts as to whether this film should be shown but was persuaded by other members of staff.
IN THE CRYPT, TUESDAY, 8.00pm

This is an experimental session to be held on MONDAY NEXT from 7.00pm to 9.30pm

SKY DIVING:
Opportunity has arisen for a small group to attend a series of sessions leading to a sky dive. Anyone interested should have a strong stomach, strong legs and nerves of steel.

RIDING:
Late last year a small group rode across the moors near Menston and came home saddle-sore and weary but very thrilled. Another Sunday afternoon session will be arranged next month. NAMES TO GEOFF.
WEST SIDE STORY: On Wednesday, April 4th the Crypt takes to the stage once again in Wetherby High School to present the exciting show WEST SIDE STORY.
Tickets are now available from P S B tv (Record Dept) Market Place Wetherby where Jeanette Mellor will be pleased to serve you.
I EXPECT ALL CRYPT MEMBERS TO COME AND SEE THE SHOW AND TO ENCOURAGE THEIR PARENTS AND FRIENDS TO COME ALONG.

JUMBLE SALE : The Crypt coffers are somewhat depleted again. PLEASE, PLEASE SORT THROUGH YOUR HOMES. Start bringing your JUMBLE NOW. This is an easy way of making a fair amount of money quickly and easily as long as each one of you does your bit
SCENE ONE:
An opportunity for a Saturday night out at Scene One in Scarborough where the top groups appear. A list of artistes will be issued next week and you can select which night you would like to go. NAMES TO NAN.

SATURDAY FILM:
The next film is on March 30th and is the classic war film 'ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT'

from Diane Bonner : I remember the production of West Side Story - Ken Dempsey was one of the Jets. I remember Malcolm Ware and the girls who were part of the Sharks dancing and singing "I want to be in America" around Wetherby town centre after the Saturday Matinee. Ted Kilner put a lot into the crypt to make it successful and he had good helpers to help him, especially good old Mrs. Bathe. He always did a fantastic firework display as well.

from Jan Hainsworth : There was also Fiddler on the Roof with Heather 'the hair' Jeynes. What a production that was and it went on to stage at the Harrogate Theatre.

from Tony Martin : I remember the crypt. I used to go down there and "dance" next to Nicola Lelean - Montego Bay was on the chart, so what year might that be? (1970/71?)
Saw Jake Thackray down there. And Midnight Cowboy. And Aftermath (top-notch local band). Ted Kilner's still around.

from Simon Chambers : I too remember the crypt very well, I should do - I had choir practice upstairs and on the odd occasion (that's all I'll admit to) would go to the crypt instead. Stacked shoes, purple hair spray and a few Tom Thumb cigars - BLISS! I also remember a few town hall dances in the early 70's before I fled to America - I always remember having a hell of a crush on Joanne Kelly, but alas, to no avail.

from Mike Norman : who remembers 10 Regal and plastic cups of coke at Kirk Deighton youth club - watching Ivor and biker friends pulling wheelies - Beryl Turner and peanut head - mods and rockers - Mr. Blue Sky and ..... RICHARD SHINKINS ?

from Jean Millar (now Edmunds) : I remember the youth clubs - the Crypt, Barleyfields and Collingham there was also one at East Keswick and my friend and I would catch the bus to go to these places! her name was Christine Prior and mine was Jean Millar we also went around with Ruth ??? (sorry Ruth if you're out there). Lillian Spatt was the youth leader at Collingham and we could buy 5 cigs from the Bridge Cafe in Wetherby before we went to catch the bus to Harrogate to go to School! I saw LULU at the Crypt in Wetherby - and she was tops !!!
I now live in Australia and love it! - come to think of it, that was where I met my first husband! Collingham Youth Club...ah memories!
